Resistance Training on GLP-1 — Weekly Plan for Muscle Retention
A practical 2–3 day strength plan for Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro users. Work around low appetite, injection timing, and fatigue while protecting lean mass.

GLP-1 medications help you eat less—but without resistance training, "less" often includes muscle. Strength work tells your body to keep lean tissue while fat drops.
Why strength beats cardio for GLP-1 users
Walking and cardio burn calories but don't send the same keep this muscle signal as loaded movement. On semaglutide or tirzepatide, most users already run a calorie deficit from appetite suppression. Adding long cardio sessions on top can deepen that deficit without protecting lean mass.
Resistance training does three things generic weight loss doesn't:
- Maintains strength — grip, stairs, carrying groceries
- Supports facial structure — underlying muscle affects how full your face looks
- Improves insulin sensitivity — complements GLP-1's metabolic effects
Sample weekly schedule (injectable GLP-1)
Many users inject weekly (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro). Align training to your energy curve:
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Injection day | Rest or 20-min walk |
| Day +1 | Light session if tolerated (bands, bodyweight) |
| Mid-week | Primary strength session — heaviest day |
| +2 days | Optional second full session |
| Pre-injection | Third session or active recovery |
Aim for 30–45 minutes, not marathon gym blocks.
Beginner full-body template (2×/week)
Do 2–3 sets of 8–12 reps. Rest 60–90 seconds between sets.
- Squat pattern — goblet squat, leg press, or sit-to-stand from a chair
- Push — wall push-up, dumbbell press, or machine chest press
- Pull — dumbbell row, band row, or lat pulldown
- Hinge — Romanian deadlift with light dumbbells or hip hinge with band
- Carry / core — farmer's walk or dead bug
Progress by adding reps first, then weight— not by training six days a week.
Eating enough to recover
Low appetite makes under-fueling easy. Before each session:
- 25–35 g protein within 2 hours (shake counts)
- Hydration — GLP-1 can reduce thirst cues
- Skip fasted hard training if you feel dizzy or lightheaded
See our protein targets guide for daily numbers.
Track strength, not just weight
Log one metric per movement weekly—same exercise, same rep range. If weights or reps trend down for three weeks while the scale keeps dropping, review protein and recovery with your clinician.
